Requesting a Modification of Template:MasterItem[]

This doesn't work, because then recharge time is already optional and what you are suggesting would only work if we change every item template itself, which is exactly what we don't want. So I ran into a rather interesting solution to the issue (a lack of flexibility with the item templates). I made a copy of the masteritem template but left off the closing </tr> in hopes of manually adding in the extra information, but as it turns out, the closing does not appear to even be needed. Strangely enough, after swapping in my test template, the formatting of the existing tables did not change at all, except that it would now let me add in extra <td> elements after calling the item template. From what I can tell, as long as the next line is a starting tag, it automatically closes the previous one. So now, I can type something like this:

{{abaddon}}<td>2</td>

and it will properly slot the item name, picture, and description into the table while also adding the extra td element (for its heart container cost) next to it. This can also be used to add on any sort of information for any page that would need it in the future. I'm just a little worried about side effects that I haven't noticed (my little experience with javascript has already made me incredibly wary of not using ending tags) so I'll try messing around with it and seeing if there are any obvious issues. So take a look at the item pool page/standard item page and see what you think. Regarding the item NO! I saw the trinket shining when I used a pill. I think it also removes pill you have taken out of the rotation. Please check it out and update the item page if I am indeed correct.

Item Capitalization[]

Hi Dooomspeaker,

I felt like this topic could use some more discussion. (Should it be here or on Binding of Isaac Rebirth_Wiki:Admin_noticeboard? I'm not sure.) Anyways, yesterday you clarified:

"It needs to be capitalized here because the ingame name is spelled in all capitals, making it impossible to use a homegenous spelling across similar names (like Lord Of The Pit). Everything is capitalized to create a standard naming format for items."

To be clear, it appears that you are saying that since it is impossible to extract the spelling from the in-game item descriptions, it is subsequently impossible to determine which specific words Edmund indented to be capitalized or not. Thus, the wiki default to capitalizing every letter in an item name.

I can understand this logic, but the problem with this overall policy is that it results in clearly wrong item naming - like Deck Of Cards, which is simply not correct in any English context. If the game did include lowercase letters, I think it is fair to say that Edmund would probably stylize the item as Deck of Cards.

It seems to be that a much saner item naming policy would be to just adhere to normal English capitalization rules. One quick way to check to see if an item title is correctly capitalized is to use titlecapitalization.com. For example, if we copy-paste in "lord of the pit", we clearly see that the correct item title should be "Lord of the Pit".

Hopefully this post doesn't come off as whiny; I don't mean to offend anyone, but I just find this a bit irksome. ;) Thoughts? --Zamie (talk) 02:16, 20 November 2014 (UTC)

video sizing[]

There is no way to dynamically size videos. 25% will not work. If the positioning is the issue, then wrapping the video in a blank table does work, but you can still only assign the size in pixels. If you can provide screenshots of what you feel is not working in various browsers, i will see if there is anything that can be done to find a good solution. — Game widow (talk) 13:42, 22 November 2014 (UTC)

First of all, I'd like to know why we are forced to display a cideo on the very top of the page, with no alternatives allowed (to a point where someone was point blank banned for removing it). There wasn't some kind of of formal agreement of anything, all we got was "deal with it", which is incredible poorly thought response. On a side note, could you get me a list of compulsory rules a wiki has to follow? It would help a lot to prevent any accidental problems in the future.

The sizing I had doe because I already got multiple complaints about as to why there was some video being present on the page (most people thought is was a shameless sel plug tbh here).

Sure, gamepedia has it's limitations and agreed advertisement spaces, but forcing a specific content to place on a specific page is overstepping it too much. This isn't even about a problematic page or anything, it's just placing a video on top "just cause it's made by gamepedia". Abusing big pages to signal boost videos doesn't leave me in a confident spot here because it means you effectively take the right to hijack any page you wish in the future.

Doesn't mean that CrsDash videos are bad though. I'd just like to see them in a section like "Starting out with Isaac" as opposed to being plastered right at the top of a page which is mostly frequented by people that know about the topic already. --Dooomspeaker (talk) 14:09, 22 November 2014 (UTC)

The Manual of Style is not of relevance here because one can assume common logic instead of "if it isn't a rule it's allowed and has a right to stay". Adding the same info on a page just on another spot isn't explicitly forbidden by any rules, yet common logic would say that doubling the same info on the same page makes no sense. I'll sit down and write a draft for a better MoS to clear up some confusion if that helps. Since we got a talk going, why do you think Godhead needs a special mention for it's unlocks while it's fine for everything else?

Magic references[]

Hello Doomspeaker! What you said here is true, of course. But since both of those items share the same reference (which is a rare occurence), I thought that players that like this fact are also interested to know that there are other items in Isaac that are a based on a MtG card.

These references would indded be nice if bundled together, but making sub groups based on trivia is kinda wonky. However, we might work out something similar: How about a "Did you know?" page that bundles all kinds of trivia together? (late reply) Why would you prefer it like that? While categories have more of a management aspect than the pages themselves, I'm sure there are still people that would be very intersted in discovering these categories at the bottom of these pages and browse through them. They are a great way for a Wiki Walk, haha.
The wiki is about documentation after all, and this would allow people for example to discover how many Magic references Edmund slipped into Rebirth -- which wouldn't be possible if we hide those categories (while they aren't obstrusive and thus could distract the players that don't care about trivia). --MudNuts (talk) 12:20, 19 December 2014 (UTC)

Oh just some wiki for a game you don't have any reason to care about. We had... disagreements (I got banned and asked to explain five small edits that most would be able to skim over, so yeah.) He also had a added a rule about banning anons infinitely for vandalising because they weren't "going to do anything good" and "Admins can edit war if they want". Also had an odd determination on userpage templates and user colors. I was new to this kind of admin and I didn't respond all too good myself. But that's in the past. I just find overly-long bans for an IP whose probably only going to make three edits then sit idle for months... irritating. — A (tc)

The motto is pretty much "keep it low on redirects if possible". For now, we don't need to have every possible combination of spellings for the item as names, especially because it leads to editors using different names to link to the same article as well. Bug management[]

Hey Doomspeaker. I just made the template {{bug}} and created Category:Bugs to improve bug-documentation. The template can simply be used in the notes section of an article to visually emphasize any bug (which could replace the bug section various articles use instead right now). Each page that uses the template is automatically included in the bug category, which allows easy access to all known bugs (and might even be of use for the dev team to some extent).

However, right now I have still a formatting issue with it: The infoboxes for the bosses and items don't use solid colors, but only darken the background. This results in an unfortunate overlap with the div style background from the bug box. I could add some margin to it to make sure this won't happen for *most* page layouts, but this doesn't seem like the professional (and best) way to solve the problem. --MudNuts (talk) 23:01, 16 December 2014 (UTC)

First of all, I like the idea a lot (especially after hearing today that our bug management sucks). You are missing another parameter that specfies on which platform the bug ocurs.

Here's the lables I propose for each platform:

  •  PC 
  •  PS4 
  •  Vita 

The best idea to make the bug box not clash would simply be to fix the width of it. I know a bit simpleton, but it's easy and it keeps the old templates intact without much problems

So here's an example of how I'd image the thing to look like then:

Bug Bug!   PC  (Description missing.)

Is that true enough to how you envisioned it?

pesky intersections

Changing the width would be about the same approach as adding a margin.
As I said, this does solve the problem for your average page layout. But if you move the window to one side of the screen for example, we still have the same problem.
To cover up the bug box (or any other infobox that might appear on the page next to the infobox), we could also change the background of the infoboxes to a solid, darker brown.
I asked because I thought there might be a trick to make the bug box "recognize" the infobox, so that you could make sure that the two never touch.
I'm not too keen with <div> tags, but AFAIK regular wiki tables never overlap by default. --MudNuts (talk) 10:03, 19 December 2014 (UTC)
It has to do with how mediawiki handles these things. Unfortunately to prevent the overlap if you resize your broswer (this is mainly a "split screen" problem), you have to separate the page into containers (

Hydra.CSS Platform Labels[]

I added the platform labels to {{bug}} as you suggested:

Bug Bug!  PC This is a PC sample bug.

(The ps4 label in particular won't accept its color and stay white for some odd reason, but PC and Vita work just fine)

I used the respective color codes explicitly rather than calling them from Hydra.CSS, however. For maintenance purposes (in case we decide to change the colors for these platforms labels someday) it would be preferable to have them available in HydraCSS and call them from there. Why would you worry about that? Isn't that in fact the thing we should aim at? We'd fulfill one of the general guideline in programming - always plan ahead to keep your code as dynamic and easy to maintain as possible.
If we keep on using this current design with "absolute code" on multiple different pages and templates, it will be a nightmare to change each single page individually -- as opposed to simply having to change the code once on the page where the template is located that gets used by all the other pages. --MudNuts (talk) 18:29, 20 December 2014 (UTC)

Emphasizing negations[]

whoops, I accidentally tried to use reddit-formatting to make the word italic here. Capitals already seemed to obstrusive, which is why I intended to replace it with italic font, which is usually used for emphasis on wikis. Having capital letters and bold font seems like overkill to me, actually. I kept your change in my edit after that (had an edit conflict from that, I still intended to fix the wrong formatting of the word from before :P), but I think it would be better to at least only use italic, capitals, or bold font, not bold caps at once^^ --MudNuts (talk) 23:32, 16 December 2014 (UTC)

That seems reasonable to me. Where is that style sheet manual? Do you mean this? It certainly would be a good idea to write down these policies here.
I'm curious though as to why you used caps along with bold font then :P GryphusR removed at emphasis during his cleanup. We could make the "not" bold again, but I'm not sure that people would commonly assume that prevented damage from the mantle does count against no damage runs. Template categorization[]

How to improve display and handling of Showcase Seeds[]

I wanted to improve {{ItemTable}}, but since it's protected I'll tell you what I wanted to add instead:

If you take a look at the page of the Cancer trinket or Black Lotus, you'll notice that it's often still useful to give further information on the seed that further describes where the respective item can be found.

For that reason we currently tend to keep the Seeds section in addition to the one in the infobox. To get around that problem and rid of that section, I'd suggest the following:

  1. Add another parameter (e.g. seedinfo) to the {{ItemTable}} that adds a dotted line below the seed when used, and displays the given string with a mouse-over effect.
  2. I also think we shouldn't just dismiss the information we already have (or people still want to give) of other potential showcase seeds. Because they are still of use for some people. (E.g. when people are looking for further seeds containing a particular item at the start that they can use for a race with a friend.)
    1. They don't need to be displayed by default, so we could add them in a box that's collapsed by default, and could be extended for those interested in alternate seeds.
    2. They could also be stored on subpages altogether, e.g. The Mind/Seeds, which would be a simple table showing the seed, the mode it needs to be played in, as well as the description where people could simply add new rows themselves without clogging up the actual page.

Another problem is the fact that the seed parameter is designed to only contain one seed, when actually we should have one showcase seed _for each platform_ as not everyone has access to the PC version to check the item out.

The parameter I suggested would also only work smoothly if seed contains nothing but the string of the seed, so simply stuffing multiple seeds with <br> tags and {{PlatPC}}, {{PlatPS4}} and {{PlatVita}} in between wouldn't do the trick either.

So that parameter is currently flawed for that use. Which is a big problem, as it already is in use on many pages.

Therefore I'd suggest to replace seed and my hypothetical seedinfo with the following: seedPC, infoPC, seedPS4, infoPS4, seedVita, and infoVita.

This would allow to simply add nothing but the seed to the respective seed(platform) parameter, as the platform boxes ({{PlatPC}} etc) could be added automatically. The description given on info(platform) could be added smoothly below each seed, and the seed only.

We'd probably need to write a script to have a bot update the old seed parameter in that regard:

  • Check if the infobox uses the seed parameter
  • Check if that parameter string uses any of the platform templates (e.g. {{PlatPC}}), and update the parameter to seed(platform) if the string matches a seed's structure (XXXX XXXX or XXXXXXXX)
  • If it does start with one of the templates (i.e. a curly brace), check the string for a seed's structure, then change it to seedPC.
  • If neither structure works, the parameter displays multiple seeds or gives further information about the respective seed, and is best handled manually.
  • Document how it went down for each page, so we know which pages to edit manually when it's done.

I know this post got quite long, as I went multiple steps ahead already, and it will take some effort. But that was necessary to plan ahead when we take that route. I think it'd be worth it. --MudNuts (talk) 09:41, 26 December 2014 (UTC)


The seed in the info box was added before I got the confirmation that one seed doesn't work for everything and is mostly an _experimental feature_. Yeah I know, I did miss out on documenting a lot of things again (same with item tables etc as you recently found out ^^). The idea of seeds overall is to have showcase seeds, which are mostly for people that want one exact item for testing or just to play with one particular item. It's not meant as seed dump for "awesome seeds", because there's other places for that. So eventually there will be only one seed for each of the 6 possible situations

The template {{SeedTable}} is how the seeds eventually will get managed on every page.

Brain / MemBrain, Guts / Mama Guts[]

I'm confused. Why did you revert these changes? It makes no sense to have MemBrains listed as subsection on the Brain page (or Mama Guts as subsection on the Guts page):

  • They are completely different enemies that spawn in different locations.
  • MemBrains (Mama Guts) aren't an alternate forms of Brains (Guts)
  • Mama Guts, however, are the alternate form of MemBrains
  • The only thing that connects them is the fact that that the big monsters spawn two small ones on death.
    • By that logic, Mulligans would need to be listed as a subsection on the Fly page.

I hope all of these points make it apparent that it's more reasonable to give MemBrain and Mama guts their own page.

If it's all the links that use the old structure (MemBrain/Mama Guts being linked as section of the Brain/Guts page) that you're worried about and make you revert the edits: I can make sure I'll update all the links to make sure there won't be any broken links from the change. The connection you're searching for is called "theme". Otherwise we would also have to put Trites under the Leaper page for example. Or technically throw together buttlickers and Grubs. The groups mosnters are currently in are slightly nonsensical, that I can easily admit, but at least you can search for them based on what the look similar too.

Also, I'm not worried about links, because I know you'd be up to the task of fixing those.

I'd be a fan of a large scale reoganization of the monsters so wen don't have pages like Fly which have a widely ranging array of different enemies. But that would need some planning.

Hidden Attributes[]

Did someone delete the entire Hidden attributes (Faith, Evil, etc) section / tab under Attributes?
I was going to add "Shot Height" as a hidden attribute but I've found that it disappeared and cannot see when on the history.

I guess I will do a major rewrite of the article, because it's quite inconsistent right now. Probably I will delete tabs because right now they make no sense (most tabs only have a single line of text). By the way, Dark Twinge also removed lines stating that (effective) range is also determined by shot speed saying they were lies but they are in fact true. Effective range depends directly on the range stat and indirectly on shot speed because distance traveled before tears fall to the ground is calculated using shot speed. This effect is pretty obvious after causing slow to any enemy or picking up items like sacred heart. I guess I will add that information as notes clarifying that the effective range reduction is just a side effect. GryphusR (talk) 15:34, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

Template:ItemTable[]

Hi Dooomspeaker. Your most recent addition to {{ItemTable}} has left some exposed wikimarkup on many item pages. Would you consider replacing this line:

with this:
| style="text-align:center;font-weight:normal;" | {{{id|''Unknown''[[Category:Items missing ID]]}}}
The latter will display an ID if it is supplied, but will also default to displaying "Unknown" if ID is not specified, as well as adding the page to a maintenance Category so it's easier to track down which items still need IDs filled in.   • The Odd Mushroom that increases tears also reduces damage.
  • Crack the Sky's beams are homing. (still a shitty item) Also, if you use it on a horseman you will die.
  • How To Jump is useful in the Isaac fight in Cathedral as it allows you to "jump over" the beams of light to avoid damage.

Remote Detonator grants 5 bombs upon pickup which can be useful if purchased from the shop since bombs are usually three or five coins.

  • We Need To Go Deeper! has a small chance to instead spawn a trap door to a retro treasure room which I sadly learned one day on a good The Lost run when I used it after entering a curse room.
  • BFFS! allow a second player to control the shots of the familiars. Also, if I remember correctly if you have three black fly familiars their size will increase to the point where you can't take damage from enemy tear shots.
  • Stop Watch has pretty much zero effect on brimstone shots which I sadly learned last night when The Bloat put an end to my nice Boss Run with The Lost.
  • Speaking of brimstone, Big Fan can block brimstone shots.

  • Rewrite pickups. where to find them, spawn conditions and rare versions replacing simple ones

While at it, I noticed you did a lot of work already as well, so thank you for that as well.

I'll get to the items, it was just important to have them all as templated list already. It makes working off items and updating things easier.

Transformations - corresponding pages and templates[]

Hello Doomspeaker. I've seen you've removed the previous page structure of Transformations as those sections were basically duplicates of each seperate transformation page.

I spent some time to create an overview table listing all the transformations with its effects, appearance, and corresponding set items - similar to how the pages like Pills or Cards and Runes list them. I stumbled across the usual problem of using the item templates of both active and passive collectibles in one table, so I adapted the appearance for the passive items to it, then saved everything here in this template.

As the structure across those transformation pages also does not appear to be quite established yet, I posted some thoughts here on what I thought could be done. --MudNuts (talk) 15:37, 19 November 2015 (UTC)
